We were spending a winter away in my husband’s childhood home of Costa Rica, and it struck us how much more happy and relaxed we were, how insanely much easier cleaning, laundry, and just time in general was…
Now I know what you’re probably thinking – uh, duh, you were on vacation in paradise. Sure, of course that was nice, but honestly it had very little to do with it.
What we realized was that we had inadvertently removed the majority of the unnecessary stuff from our lives.
We had a taste of glorious freedom, and we were hooked.
So we went home and started randomly attacking our stuff, just looking for whatever we felt we could part with.
But while getting rid of stuff is always great in theory, it can be quite a different story when you’re holding what feels like your only tie to a cherished memory in your hands. And you have a lot of memories you don’t want to forget…
Then there’s the ever-nagging thought of “but what if I need this someday…?”
(Never mind that we were totally fine without all that stuff back home the whole winter we were away.)
So we found ourselves in a bit of a conundrum – knowing we were happier without most of our stuff, but also having a really hard time getting rid of a lot of it.
It took us a while, but we finally figured out that there are 3 things which work together to solve these problems quite handily.
