On Thursday/Friday David worked 23 hours in a 33 hour period. He took 2 hours out for worship practice, 7 for sleep, and 1 to contemplate how to get some new eyes. We slept over at my parents’ and since we hadn’t planned to be there, we didn’t have our glasses or anything, so we both took our contacts out when David got off at midnight. When I started to put mine back in after sleeping, I saw that the edges looked rather like they had been sitting out for an hour rather than in solution for the last seven. I had a feeling it wouldn’t work, but figured it was worth a shot, so I tried one. Yeah, not so much happening. I quickly racked my brain tying to think of what might have caused it. Did my contacts suddenly expire??? Was the solution we used really, REALLY expired??? I checked David’s, and yeah, same story. So I rinsed them all off and put them in fresh solution for a while to see if they would heal. Sadly, no. But David felt he might somehow have better luck than I. He put one in, declaring, “oh yeah, this will work,” only to start trying to claw it out two seconds later. His eye was red all day. We went searching for the small solution bottle we had used off my brothers’ bathroom counter, and finally found it in their cupboard, now clearly labeled with black sharpie warning “DO NOT USE” and a skull and crossbones. I only wish the black marker had come out a little sooner. It turned out that we had marinated our unsuspecting contacts in “piercing solution”, a main ingredient of which, no doubt, is alcohol. Don’t try this at home, friends. David had to feel his way over to work to direct his big, blob-shaped workers, while my mother drove my fuzzy-eyed self home to scrounge for glasses and contacts. I found that I actually had a pair left, but David only had a right eye, and I found one of my right eyes. It just so happens that his right eye is only .25 weaker than is left eye, and my right eye is .25 weaker than his right eye. So with the quick wit God has granted me, I figured that based on the length of time it has been since our last eye exams, there was a good chance we could do a bit of a shuffle and come out ok. My right contact went in his right eye and his right contact went in his left eye. No headaches, even! And mine wasn’t toric… so perhaps, as I had suspected all along, he doesn’t really need those more expensive little suckers. It’s fun being married =)
Well i’m not really one for making fun of people , but this is just hilarious . I figure if she went on public tv in her own country then i don’t she cares . Anyways … here it is courtesy of our friend Eddy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RgL2MKfWTo
Yay, David got the player working again =) You just might find a song you enjoy on it somewhere. There aren’t a lot, but there is a smattering of our favorites. We add more as we remember… not all of “our” songs are up yet, but the Spanish ones are. I wonder how many more songs we’ll accumulate over the years. I think we have five or six already. Hmm, I guess that’s about one per year of being together.
Maeve’s favorite thing to say besides “up” right now has become “oh maaan”… we thought it sounded like she was saying that for a while now, and at times where it made sense, but didn’t know where she would have picked it up. The other day my mom and I decided that was definitely what she’s saying, and that perhaps grandpa might have taught it to her. She has also learned a rather flawed way of “saying” “yes” – mom taught her to nod by my mom putting her hand on Maeve’s head and helping her nod, so now Maeve thinks that to indicate “yes” she has to put her own hand on her head and nod. I know that was confusing to follow, but I’m not sure how else to better say it! in any case, it’s rather humorous!
In other news, we didn’t do all that much over the holiday weekend, but we enjoyed being together. And the Neuschwanders alerted us to a mattress sale that was going on yesterday, so we got a lovely new mattress for $299! We should be picking it up today and sleeping comfortably tonight, at long last :-)
A friend of mine (who shall remain unnamed) and I were recently discussing why we are looking old at such young ages… or rather, why we are already displaying things such as wrinkles (me) and white hair (her)… stretchmarks and varicose veins can be attributed to pregnancy, but ugh to all of the above. We don’t like to be reminded of getting older, because that reminds us that we will one day really be OLD, hopefully. But so frustrating, since we feel so young and wonder how we even came to be married with kids?!?! And as I’ve suspected for a while, I bet our parents might still be thinking the same thing (of themselves)… time goes blessedly fast, but rather unmercifully so. We’ve tried to make it a policy with our little family to enjoy every stage. Not always easy when we’re tired or feeling overwhelmed, but we do try. I can honestly say that we have very much enjoyed every stage with Maeve thus far. We love to just watch her. Too often, though, we forget to view each other with the same awe, enjoyment, and pleasure. We are very much working together toward many goals, but in working side by side, it’s easy to take each other for granted. In our time since we’ve been back in the states, however, we have had much opportunity to realize just how much we rely on one another: when we hop in the van to come home everyday there is a collective sigh of relief and joy in being together again. That usually lasts for a few minutes at least :-)
I’m sorry you haven’t been getting your email notices of posts again… every time we change/add things on here it is a balancing act to make sure stuff isn’t working against each other. We’re still trying to get the gallery back to a happy place again. It would also be nice to get the music player back in working order – we have such lovely song selections… Time is very short in these days of going in to work early and subsequently going to bed early, though. We’ll hopefully be back to more pleasant hours soon.
Economic stimulus check. I didn’t think that’s what it was because when we did our taxes I thought it said we didn’t qualify. Of course I also didn’t say that I wanted to send our state payment in the mail, because I would never in a million years say that, but they somehow thought I did. Something somewhere is a little flawed. In any case, if we actually checked our mail more often we wouldn’t have been so confused, cause they did send us something telling us we would be getting the money. Anyway, there are a few things on our wish list that might be a reality soon now! I have really been wanting an elliptical machine, but I was so blessed to find one at a garage sale last night, and for only $20!!! It’s not the cream of the crop in the world of ellipticals, no doubt, but I think it will work just fine for us. I was so excited when I found it that I almost gave David a heart attack when I ran to where he was putting our spare tire back under our van and squealed the news. Thankfully he had the foresight to unload all the old tires from the back of our van before we left to the sales, cause we did end up making a bit of a nice haul. (We had to get all new tires when we got home from Costa Rica. I think I mentioned that before.) David’s treasure of the evening was an atomic clock/thermometer that projects the time and temperature on the wall or ceiling or wherever you point it. Really rather handy to read in the dark. Maeve’s favorite finds were a little $1 car that she can ride and that plays music, and a very action packed activity table (which is more for any subsequent children we might have than for her, but she does happen to really enjoy it anyway). We really aren’t at all into buying random stuff ahead for the future, which we’ll have to store in nonexistent space. In fact, we are soon having a garage sale to get rid of a bunch more stuff to do our best to make more room in the small space we do have to work with. However, this was really a good find in the baby stuff department, I felt. Only $15 for an activity table in really great condition, the kind that has the attachable seat for the baby to go around the table when they’re learning to walk. All in all, we felt very blessed last night.
A few Maeve tidbits: you know how “up” is kinda her favorite word right now? I forgot to mention how she was saying it in her sleep the other night… on top of trying on random articles of clothing that she finds, she really enjoys walking around talking on the phone. I guess she gets that from her dad. The roaming while talking thing, I mean. Sometimes her phone doubles as a calculator. We think we’ve deciphered the “uh ee” she says over and over again while playing with my mom’s big calculator when she helps her work, to be “one (two) three”, the two obviously being omitted, not to mention parts of the other words. She has a book with different pictures for the letters of the alphabet, and the N has 123 (numbers), so I say that when we look at that page and I guess she decided she likes it for some reason. When we were reading it tonight she said that and the connection clicked. Oh the intrigue of little minds at work…
