The holidays can be so much fun – and they should be!
They only become stressful when we feel like we can’t stay on top of everything – like we’re being trampled.
If you knock a few things off of your list early, you not only get to better enjoy doing those things, but also get to relax more going into the holiday season because you have less to do!
Here are 10 things you can check off your holiday list now:
1. Holiday cards/greetings
Who in the world decided that we have to send people holiday cards?
I mean, I understand sending greetings and updating your family picture that hangs on your friends’ and family’s fridges throughout the year, but it’s just one more task to stuff into an already crazy time.
There is absolutely no reason you couldn’t send your card early this year. This gives you the chance to be the first to make everyone excited for the holidays, not to mention make them jealous that you’re so on the ball 😉
Even if you do want to wait to mail anything, you could get all the time-consuming aspects out of the way now – write your letter, get your pictures printed, address the envelopes, etc.
Or, you could copy what we usually do and send more of a New Year’s card. (I shouldn’t say “send”. We haven’t actually mailed cards in years, so the only people who really get them are those who we happen to see and remember to give one to…)
Pro Tip: Make it so simple that it will be hard to tell when it was from – no year, no gaudy holiday borders. I mean, maybe it’s still the current card 🙂
2. Meal planning/food prep!
Even though we tend to be so busy during the holiday season, we don’t get to skip pesky things like preparing meals for all the hungry mouths. There may even be more hungry mouths than normal.
Just thinking about it is giving me a picture of [easyazon_link identifier=”B00004YO0Y” locale=”US” tag=”tictin-20″]that one fishing game[/easyazon_link].
So since we know it’s coming, why not plan ahead to have really simple food during that time, or even make some freezer meals in advance.
I think the only time that should be spent in the kitchen during the holidays is time you want to spend making stuff together or enjoying treats that you made in advance – not having to get up early and slave away all day.
Stay tuned for a post with meal planning ideas!
It’s so much more fun thinking about gifts in advance than rushing around guiltily last minute. Stay tuned for some posts to further simplify this process!
Seeing as we don’t live in the Garden of Eden, there are holiday parties, family gatherings, and other public appearances to which you’ll have to be wearing clothes.
Why not think about these in advance and plan out outfits for your whole family now? Then you’ll be able to make sure the items are clean and purchase any missing components now.
Along the same lines, you often like to have fresh hair around the holidays when you’re going to be seeing everyone. Go ahead and make any necessary cut or dye appointments now so that you’re not scrambling last minute.
If you’re anything like my mom, you feel like you have to deep clean all the random places when you’re going to have guests. Honestly, it does wonders for your mental state to know your cupboards and closets, under the beds and in the sofa cushions are clean. Sic your kids on some of these tasks 🙂
What would feel even more awesome would be to get rid of some of your extra clutter so that there’s less to get messy and maintain during the holiday season. Here’s an easy place to start!
7. Stock up on the basics
You don’t want to be running around last minute because you run out of essentials like toilet paper and hand soap. In fact, there’s really no reason to ever have to make a last minute dash to the store for any of the basics because you can just subscribe (and save!) to have them delivered to you on intervals (every 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 months) that make sense with your family’s use.
8. Guests or travel
Will you be having any guests in your home during the holidays, or will you perhaps be traveling and a guest in someone else’s home?
Make a list of what needs to be done in conjunction with either of those things and check as much of it off your list now as you can – which is honestly probably most of it.
The holidays are a prime time to be taking pictures and capturing memories on video, but they’re also a prime time to run out of space on too-full cards or for files to get disorganized as you’re quickly dumping them at the last minute.
Empty your cards and organize your files now, make sure you have backup batteries if you want/need them, and make sure everything is functioning the way it should.
You could extend this to other equipment and appliances in your home as well – I know we don’t clean our toaster often enough, for example.
10. Immune system boosters
Nothing zaps your holiday spirit quite like coming down with a bug at the most inopportune time, which tends to be more likely as the weather changes, we get around different germs through travel, and stress levels are higher and sleep levels lower. Why not start building up your immune system now to ward of the yuckies. Here are a few of the things we like to use.
What other things can you check off your list now so you can relax a bit more through the holiday season?
