This entry is part 30 of 31 in the series Exploring Minimalism

Minimalist Journey beginning:

In the fall of 2011, we sorted through our shed. We knew we wanted to start paring down our stuff, and that was the most obvious mess to start with.

We spent that winter in David’s homeland, Costa Rica, and while there I somehow ran across the concept of minimalism as a lifestyle, and it just clicked.

When we came back home, we decided to turn our bedroom into the sleeping and clothes room – as in, we moved our kids and their clothes in there also. Living in less than 1000 sq ft with too much stuff encouraged us to get resourceful – we wanted the other bedroom to be a play room and for us to have space for exercising and stuff.

Here is some very candid footage of what that all looked like…

While we’ve made a lot of progress over the years, it’s still definitely a journey. In 2013 our goal was to gain more clarity and focus, and I feel like we’ve come leaps and bounds from the beginning of the year.

We’re very much looking forward to spending this winter away again, and all the added focus and clarity that inevitably brings, being out of our more comfortable environment. Because of the focus and editing that we’ve been working on, we already know that we want 2014 to be about relationships, so I’m looking forward to exploring that.

Ultimately that’s what minimalism is about – defining what matters and getting rid of everything that hinders and drags us down.
